有时候我叫Mickey“少爷”，因为他小学二年级时写了一篇小作文《我怎样当少爷》（如下图）。最近我有时叫他“主席”，因为他最近在寄宿学校当了初一年级的学生会主席。上次周五回来，我问他在学校有什么好玩的事，他笑着说：“声声‘主席好’。”原来是同班同学打趣他。

在西非时，从船员兄弟那里拷了不少节目看，其中看过Jolin的演唱会，对她在里面的一段话印象深刻，就是她提到了报上写她一段文字说她不是天才，而是地才，但是勤奋。联想到自己的翻译上，我早就知道自己才能有限，会坦然接受这方面的批评但。但我也希望像Jolin那样，用投入、勤奋来弥补自己的不足。

清炒蕃薯叶,13元。这首菜要是给老家人看到，肯定会大笑特笑，因为遍地都是蕃薯叶，又何需钱买？人们也很少吃，多少时候都是喂猪的。对了，我还记得老家有个酸菜缸，小时在里面腌过红薯叶、蒜苔，后来突然就不用了，也不是因为蔬菜品种多了的原因。

 

广州的城中村中经常有池塘，重度污染的池水里游动着塘虱鱼（所以为了你的健康，请不要吃塘虱鱼），塘边的大排档是一道明亮的风景线，特别在夜幕降临之后。

上世纪二三年代时，瑟伯尚能以一般的方式画漫画，但是后来因为视力下降，不得不在很大幅的纸上用黑色蜡笔作画，有时在黑纸上用白铅笔画。他完成的最后一幅画是一幅自画像，用黄色蜡笔在黑纸上作画。这幅自画像被1951年某期《时代》杂志用作封面。

 

瑟伯视力不好，小时候跟兄弟玩游戏，一只眼睛被其一用箭射伤，后失明。瑟伯到晚年几乎完全失明。他开始发表漫画是从1930年开始，当时E.B.怀特在垃圾篓里发现他扔掉的画作，觉得不错就拿去发表，从此瑟伯为《纽约客》既画又写，直到50年代。怀特和瑟伯合著一本《性是必要的吗？》，怀特坚持使用瑟伯的插图。

同样是老一代翻译家的作品，有的虽然还在版，却让人难以卒读，而有的老翻译家作品，真是读来满口生香，让我这个译者佩服不已。他们的译作，经受住了时间的考验。我最近的发现，是已经去世的前辈蔡慧先生。这本《飞女郎与哲学家》有蔡先生译的一篇《刻花玻璃酒缸》。

 

 

有一个词也挺搞，就是driveway，指的是接着街道，通向自家车库的那段路面，译为“私家车道”、“行车道”什么的都感觉不自然。

美国许多镇都有Main Street，整个镇应该都是沿着这条大街发展起来的，但是译为“大街”吧，总感觉有点别扭。国内不少地方也有“大街”这样的路名，但好多都会加上一个方向，如“东大街”、“西大街”什么的。附图为在镇海拍，忘了是西大街还是东大街。

年纪大了，经常丢三落四，有时忘了带手机，昨天上班路上才发现忘了扎皮带，没时间拐回家，只好硬着头皮去上班。公司又不允许衬衫下摆露出，于是体面全靠一粒钮扣维持了。好在坚持了一天没出事故，也没人发现我未扎皮带，就是这后一点，让我有点心理不平衡：我就那么容易被忽视吗？

 

guess这个词不用每次都译为“猜”，有时候这样译了反而会让人感觉不自然、不合逻辑。这个词有这样一个释义可参考：to suppose; think: 假定；认为：I guess he was wrong.我想他错了。

 

汤姆·斯托帕德是具有强烈政治倾向的剧作家，他这方面的作品以《每个好孩子都该受宠》（Every Good Boy Deserves Favour）和《乌托邦彼岸》〈The Utopia Coas〉为代表。前者抨击的是苏联视政治异见者为精神病的作法，后者是野心勃勃的演出达10小时左右的三部曲，刻画了以赫尔岑为中心的俄国知识分子群像。

在一本译作中读到这句：“我至少要给予你一些力所能及的帮助，把你拉出墓穴。别猝不及防地把我拉下去和你做伴。”问题是原文是一句对话，所以翻译用词就有可商榷之处，“给予”、“猝不及防”这样的词都有点过于书面语。这一篇中的对白往往有这个问题。再贴一下郑克鲁老师的看法供参考。

 

前天做意大利面，配金宝番茄酱，嫌不过瘾，把桌上一小包芥辣调味料也加到我那一份上，因为怕Mickey议论，是偷偷加的。结果因为习惯了吸面条，而不是像外国人一样把面卷到叉子上吃，一吸，可不得了，脸红脖子粗地咳了半天。Mickey关心地问我怎么了，我眼泪汪汪地看着他说：“没，没事。”

 

《门萨的娼妓》收入伍迪·艾伦三本书《扯平》、《不长羽毛》和《副作用》，三联书店印三次，印数两万多。但是08年版权到期，此书已绝版。上海译文已引进上述三本书，另请人翻译，待出。可留意。

昨天晚上回去得晚，到家后发现娘俩在怄气，原来是从学校回来后，Mickey没有做作业，而是看了部《跳出我天地》，让他妈妈很不满意。在此关头，我果断地站在Mickey一边，说：“他看的是名片啊，不比你看的那些韩剧好一千倍？”嗯，我一定要保护好我家的文艺少年。

 

I’m going to see the doctor in the morning. 英语中经常有这种情况，前一天晚上会这样说起第二天上午（早上）的事，用in the morning，译的时候应根据中文习惯，译成“明天上午”。

 

看到一句译文：“别再愁眉苦脸的了，甜心。你只不过是走了点狗屎运罢了。情况会好转的。”感觉译者是错用了“狗屎运”。原文中应是指坏运气，而“狗屎运”这个词是讽刺性地指好运气。

 

为你写的歌，没有听众。

 

多年前有一晚坐中巴车，一个姑娘一路大声跟可能是男友煲电话粥，一车人被迫听着。到后来她坐过站，开始埋怨司机，有位男乘客大声说：“你光顾着跟你男朋友打情骂俏了！”全车人笑，那姑娘又恨又惭，下车。

看到这句译文：“你只要把鱼钩放在鱼待着的地方，就能钓上一条来。它们是很大的鱼，会不停地挣扎。”中间那句“它们是很大的鱼”有点刺眼，这就是所谓的“翻译腔”吧。其实根本没必要跟着原文走，一句“鱼很大”就搞定了。
